OUR STORY

Welcome to Newbard Farm, a family-run organic farm nestled in the beautiful countryside of Lismore, Co. Waterford. As passionate stewards of the land, we blend time-honored farming traditions with regenerative and sustainable practices that prioritize animal welfare, soil health, and environmental care.

We specialize in outdoor-raised heritage breeds including Oxford Sandy & Black, Berkshire, and Tamworth chosen for their resilience, temperament, and exceptional meat quality. Our animals enjoy space to root, forage, and behave naturally in an enriching environment designed for their well-being.

Every animal on our farm is raised 100% organic, hormone-free, and grown without routine antibiotics. This results in richer flavour, better animal health, and higher-quality products you can trust.

We also raise sheep and chickens, and grow a diverse range of seasonal vegetables and fruit. These systems support biodiversity, enrich our soil, and help us farm in balance with nature

ABOUT NEWBARD FARM

Newbard Farm began in 2015 with a small group of pigs, a lot of questions, and a determination to farm in a way that felt right.

We didn’t set out to build something big we set out to build something honest.

What started as a small outdoor pig enterprise slowly grew through learning, hard work, and plenty of trial and error. Over the years, we developed a deep respect for heritage breeds such as Oxford Sandy & Black, Tamworth crosses, and Berkshire. These pigs suit our land and our philosophy  hardy, characterful animals that thrive outdoors and reward patience with exceptional quality.

From the beginning, animal welfare has guided every decision. Our pigs live outside, with space to root, wallow, and behave naturally. We believe good farming cannot be rushed, and that animals raised with care produce food with real integrity.

As we grew in confidence, we made the decision to transition fully to organic farming. Achieving full organic certification was a milestone moment not because it changed how we farmed, but because it formally recognised the standards we had already committed to.

Along the way, we realised that producing organic animals was only part of the challenge. Access to organic processing remains limited, and we began to see how this gap affects not just us, but many small-scale farmers. That realisation sparked a new ambition to help build better infrastructure for organic and local producers, strengthening short food chains and keeping value within rural communities.

We are proud to be members of Talamh Beo, standing alongside farmers who believe in fairness, sustainability, and a viable future for small-scale agriculture. We are also part of our local BioRegion, working with others to promote agroecology, biodiversity, and community-led food systems.

Today, Newbard Farm is a mixed organic farm. Alongside our pigs, we rear sheep and chickens, and grow vegetables and orchard produce. Diversity keeps our soil healthy, strengthens resilience, and keeps us connected to the rhythms of the land.

Our journey is still unfolding. What began with a few pigs has grown into something bigger a commitment to farming with integrity, supporting fellow farmers, and producing food that we are genuinely proud to stand over.

Feeding in Harmony with the Land

Our pigs diet reflects the diversity of our farm and the changing seasons. Alongside their certified organic feed, we grow pumpkins, kale, peas and oats here on the land crops that nourish both soil and stock.

Pumpkins are a favourite in autumn, while winter kale provides hardy greens through the colder months. Oats and peas form part of a balanced ration throughout the year, and orchard apples offer a natural seasonal treat.

As part of our holistic approach to animal health, we also make use of diverse pasture and selected anthelmintic plants, along with pumpkin seeds, to naturally support gut health in our outdoor system. By encouraging dietary diversity and natural resilience, we reduce reliance on routine interventions while maintaining strong, thriving animals.

By growing what we can ourselves and working with the natural properties of plants, we strengthen the link between soil, crop and livestock creating a balanced organic system rooted in care and observation
